Celebrating death in style: Ghana’s fantasy coffins

Story highlights

  • Some coffin makers in Ghana make elaborate “fantasy coffins”
  • The coffins are made to symbolize the deceased’s profession in life

(CNN)It’s a business that thrives on death, but a group of coffin makers in Ghana has made something quite remarkable out of it.

They call themselves “fantasy” coffin makers and they make coffins that are anything but ordinary, producing caskets in the form of ships, buildings, animals, cars and much more.
They make caskets for families who believe that life transcends death and that the deceased will continue with his or her profession in the afterlife. The idea is that the dead have to be buried in something that represents the job they did while alive, so that they remember where they come from and what they have left behind.
Making fantasy coffins is a serious business in Ghana, says Joseph Ashong (better known as Paa Joe), a prominent practitioner of the craft. He has been in the trade for more than 50 years and recalls how he started out in his career.
“In 1962, when I was 15 years old, my mother sent me to work with my uncle to learn the coffin trade,” he remembers.
“I graduated (from the apprenticeship) in 1974 and have made coffins ever since.”
It’s this business that has sustained Paa Joe and his family over the years, and the same business that caught the attention of former UN secretary general Kofi Annan and former US president Bill Clinton, who have both reportedly visited Paa Joe in the past, as well as former US president Jimmy Carter, who reportedly purchased two fantasy coffins made by him.

A new beginning

For international clients, he bills anything from $5,000 to $15,000 per coffin. The materials for making coffins to international standards are not cheap, Paa Joe says. Mahogany or some high-grade hardwood is used to protect the coffins from insects and cracking. The finish has to be perfect, he explains.
For a local client, however, he can use cheaper materials and charge as little as $1,000.
“It depends on the details,” he says, referring to the shape of the coffin; whether it’s a coffin shaped like a shoe, animal or human being, Paa Joe has made them all.
“The Ga community, to which I belong, believe in the afterlife and they believe also that the coffins I make will deliver them to this new beginning,” he tells CNN.

Jordan Ayew’s goal against Watford on Saturday was his third Premier League goal of the season for Swansea.

Swansea’s Ghanaian forward Jordan Ayew says the club’s new manager Carlos Carvalhal has asked him to be “a leader” as they look to move out of the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Ayew scored his third Premier League goal of the season in which lifted the team off the bottom of the table.

“The gaffer came in and asked me to be the leader in the dressing room,” Ayew told BBC Sport.

“I try to do that, I try to show it on the pitch as well as with my running, with my commitment, with my fighting spirit and that’s what I try to do now.

“I don’t like to lose because I think I can do much more, I can give more to the team,” he added.

He described Swansea’s win over Watford as “incredible” – giving new manager Carlos Carvalhal a victory in his first match in charge since his appointment

Ayew said the three points have given the team a boost as they head into the new year.

“It’s a massive feeling. It was incredible that we got rewarded because we really worked hard. It’s a good step forward,” said Ayew.

“The manager told us to do the basic things. He said if you don’t run you come and sit down next to me (on the bench).”

The win was the Welsh side’s first away victory in the Premier League since August.

They face Tottenham at home in their next game on Tuesday

In a new interview with Saturday Punch, Iceberg said that people’s opinion of their relationship do not faze them.

“We are actually the same age and she is not taller than me, except when she wears shoes with high heels. I don’t care if people think she is older than me or she has more money. A relationship is shared between the two people involved in it so if anybody has anything to say about our relationship, they should feel free, but it does not faze us. I mean, even Jesus Christ was criticised, so who are we? Anybody can say anything about us because, at the end of the day, everybody has freedom of speech. Whatever they say does not faze us because we know what we saw in each other”

Speaking on how they met and started a relationship, Iceberg Slim said:

“I met Juliet Ibrahim in Durban, South Africa about a year and a half ago. We exchanged contacts and became friends. Our friendship later grew into an amorous affair and at the end of the day, we just became a happy couple. The fact that we did not make our relationship a secret by posting our loved-up pictures online is because we are being ourselves. We chose not to follow the African mentality that you must keep your relationship secret because of the society or media. We are enjoying ourselves and getting to know each other as a couple. There is no reason why I should hide her; she is celebrating me because I love her and I am doing the same as well. This is not something we should hide.”

Juliet Ibrahim and Iceberg Slim have been prety vocal aboiut his relationship which began sometime late last year.

Following claims that expatriate businesses were charged between $25,000 and $100,000 to sit close to the him, now the president wants to make sure people who sit close to him at events have not be asked to pay money.

The matter has become a subject of parliamentary enquiry after the Speaker of Parliament summoned Members of Parliament to consider a motion for full scale parliamentary probe.

Even before MPs return to the house to consider the motion, the Flagstaff House has cleared the Trade and Industry Ministry of any wrongdoing.

Jokingly speaking on the matter at the 2017 MUSIGA Grand Ball held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, President Akufo-Addo said he hopes the MUSIGA Presidential Grand Ball, of which participants paid Gh¢1,500.00 as participation fee will not become a subject of parliamentary enquiry too.

“I hope that it will not be said that I asked people to pay a Gh¢1,500 to come and have dinner with me tonight. This is a MUSIGA Presidential Ball and it should stay as such else I’ll be the subject of parliamentary enquiry,” he joked.

There has been a public outcry over the fashion style of Ebony, with Kumchacha weighing into the matter to urge her to change her style of dressing.

Kumchacha has reveals receiving threatening messages from fans of Ebony following his criticism of the artiste.

Speaking exclusively to Kofi TV, he said: “I have been a critic of Ebony Reigns and not attacked her or insulted her but just when I criticized her sometime back I started receiving threatening messages from some fans in Germany saying that they will come and burn down my church.

“I asked them what my crime was only for them to tell me that they are planning to burn down my church because I have attacked their celebrity. I have reported the issue to the Police just in case they go ahead with their plans they can be arrested wherever they are.”

He described the threats to have his church burnt down as “useless” since he is a good friend of Ebony.

“Why should these useless guys in Germany threaten me when indeed Ebony and I are very good friends. I have no issue with the singer but only thought it wise to criticize her dressing. If that is how fans behave, then pastors who speak their minds will have their churches burnt” he noted.
